Imagine walking in the woods with your faithful four-legged friend, the wind in the leaves and the intoxicating scent of truffles permeating the air. A unique experience that brings together experienced and passionate truffle hunters, made possible by the incredible sniffing of truffle dogs.
But how do you train a dog?
Training begins when the dog is still a puppy. Through play and positive reinforcement, the dog is taught to follow the scent of the truffle and indicate its presence to the handler.
Patient and constant work that requires a deep understanding of the dog and its behavior. Training sessions should be short and fun, to keep the dog motivated and focused. But that’s not the only way to start a dog, you can teach a lot of things to older dogs as well, our zara is a demonstration of that!
All breeds can be used in truffle hunting, as all dogs have a highly developed sense of smell. Some more than others, however, are biologically more predisposed for this kind of work. They are:
- Lagotto Romagnolo: an Italian breed, a water dog with an exceptional sense of smell and great energy, distinguished by its medium size and thick curly coat.
- Bloodhounds: hunting breeds with excellent stamina and strong searching instincts such as pointers, kurzhaar, Italian poodle etc.
- Spaniel: small to medium-sized and versatile dogs that are agile and suitable for different types of terrain, such as springers and cockers.
In addition to olfactory skills, the truffle dog must possess other important characteristics:
- Obedience: the dog must be able to carry out the handler’s commands.
- Complicity: the dog and handler must work in sync to be successful.
- Passion: the dog must be motivated by the work of truffle hunting.
Truffle hunting training is a challenging but rewarding experience. An opportunity to strengthen the bond with your dog and experience a unique adventure in nature together. Have you ever wondered if your dog could do that?
